1.7 Appropriate Workforce

At a joint discussion the West Mids Forum felt the level 1 requirement should read 'appropriate and sufficient staffing to carry out core responsibilities' It was felt that service level agreements and contracts for professional advice - conservation, archives and records management, were important for any non-professional led or voluntary organisations to demonstrate that their staffing was appropriate. In our discussion an advanced POD level consisting of higher level targets which PODs would have to reach to be able to maintain their POD status was felt to be desirable. Clearly this would require higher levels of professional staffing than a voluntary run organisation.

Why the contribution is important

It was as the result of a discussion of 7 heads of service, archivists and users in the region

Further to this feedback - the requirement of one days external training was felt to be quite prescriptive and that training is always linked to appraisals and personal development needs. Shadowing or other forms of training such as study leave may be just as beneficial. On the other hand it was also recognised that one day's training per member of staff was not an excessive requirement. The level 2 example of a paid intern post was not felt to be justifiable. There was a suggestion that it may be better to assess CPD commitments by the number of registered archivists within the service.

Further to this feedback it was felt that 1.75 level 2 requirement about using volunteers to work with users not just documents should be removed and that evidence of a progression for volunteers like induction and training would be more relevant.
